pang-pang-pang-pang-pang

Pang-pang-pang-pang-pang.

Pang-pang-pang.

Pang-pang-pang-pang.

WHAT ON EARTH IS THAT NOISE? I woke up to this ridiculous, annoying, metallic, funny noise a few mornings ago... and it was the weirdest thing. I couldn't for the life of me identify it - but it definitely sounded metallic, like two metal pipes banging against each other. And there seemed to be some sort of pattern to it. The first morning, I woke up alone, so there was no one to confirm the sound. It was certainly louder outside, but still not identifiable. The second morning, dear husband was home - but of course, unable to hear the noise. We went out for the day, though, and when we returned - there it was! Pang-pang-pang-pang-pang! Pang-pang-pang-pang-pang! Finally, he had heard it. I was no longer a freak.

But we still didn't know what the noise was.

Well, this morning, all theories were laid to rest as the four-and-a-half inch culprit showed his face. Or, reared his ugly head. Again and again and again. It was... scratch that, it IS a woodpecker! A foolish WOODpecker. Banging his little beaky face on the metal chimney of our neighbor's house. I thought, what - are there bugs in the chimney or something? I mean, this little guy has been pecking all day. There's got to be more to it than the great feeling of pounding your beak against metal. And this irritating bird is showing no favoritism; I have now seen him banging that beak against the (you guessed it) metal chimney of the house behind our neighbor's house. I have no idea how we could stop him - how do you make him stop when you don't know what made him start?

Apparently there IS something to be said for the feeling of pounding your beak against metal. I can't imagine any sound more annoying or distracting (for those of us studying for finals). Maybe stillettos on the floor above you. But at least in that case there is someone to talk to, if you wanted.

Ay yi yi.
