GO YANKS!

At first I wasn't sure if I was happy that the Yankees clinched the AL east by another team's loss. I mean, it'd be better if they came from behind in a tight game and crushed the other team with two grand slams in the ninth. But then I realized that the Yankees clinched the AL east by Boston losing a game, and I thought... there is probably no better way for that to have happened.

In a recent Associated Press article on espn.com, Curt Schilling is quoted to have said:

"It ended the way it was supposed to end. They played a lot better than us over the course of the season," Schilling said in Boston. "I don't think we opened the door for them as much as they kicked it in."

Of course this is just the stuff that makes me smile that wry New York smile, saying, SO LONG, SUCKA! to Boston and all their fans. I especially like the reference to kicking in the door.

Josh is convinced that this will be another Subway Series. I can't say that I'd mind; I find the Mets a very likable team this year, and it'll be fun to watch the games together. It seems these two teams matched up in the post season not so long ago.... when was it, 2000? And who won that series, again? All I know is that Josh's and my first date included a few hours of baseball, and I went home a very happy girl. Not sure if that's cause I'd met my future Mr., or if that was because THE YANKS BEAT THE METS TO WIN THE 2000 WORLD SERIES. I'll have to think on that.

Hey Keller,

Go ahead and lump my pop in with the rest of the Yankees fans who you consider to be "arrogant, pompous, and annoying." If you didn't respect us so much, you wouldn't hate us so much, and that's a fact. Additionally, thanks for helping me to put my finger on how I feel about 99.9% of Boston fans. Arrogant, yes. Pompous, yes. Annoying, heck yes. There's something else there, though, too... some kind of blindness, an inability to see fact... Nah, you know what, let's just stick with arrogant, pompous, and annoying. Good enough.

Keller.

Why does it have to be personal?

Look. You're a Red Sox fan. Because of that, you will always be subjected to taunting like "the curse of the Bambino" or "Bill Buckner!" or more recently, "2004 was a fluke." That's your lot. You love Boston, and you have to take the good with the bad.

I, on the other hand, love the Yankees. MY lot includes "the Evil Empire" or "anyone can buy a championship" or "bunch of all-stars" and more recently, "Choke Rod." That's my lot. I'm a Yankees fan, and I'll take it, because I love my team.

I say all of this to say, why is it such a big deal when these phrases get thrown around? It's what we do, WE including you, and any other sports fan on the planet. We find the things that we see as weaknesses in our opponents, or the things we know will get our rivals going, and we shout them from the rooftops. It's part of what makes sports great. We love the game, and we pretend we hate each other... if we didn't, the noticeable lack of competitiveness would make things boring.

I've had it with the angry replies. My intention has always been good-natured sparring between fans of opposite teams and, to be honest with you, this particular post was just happiness that the Yanks had clinched the post season. I didn't even realize that you read my blog.

Feel free to leave a response, but know: I will not. I lay this to rest, right here.
