So I hurt my back at work today. I have no idea when I did it, or how. Of course I helped to lift patients today. Of course I bent over countless times today. Of course I ran from one end of the unit and back ninety times today. Of course my muscles were tense today. It was all I could do to hold back tears as I walked out of a patient's room around 1345. What on earth had happened? I still cannot explain.
I did find out where the Occupational Medicine office is. I asked one of the other girls to walk me there, and I could hardly keep pace. I was doing this little shuffle step to keep my pain bearable; "nurse pace" was a joke. She dropped me off and charged back to the unit, like we all do when we are so busy we can't even think straight. Occupational Medicine gave me 600 mg of Motrin, 3 ice packs, the Worker's Compensation booklet, and directed me to the Occupational Medicine building on the other campus of our hospital system.
OK...
I drive a stick shift. My husband is out of town for the week. I was sort of stuck. We paged the nurse manager as I tried to scrawl out some notes to end my shift, and she offered to drive me to the Occ. Med. building and back home. Of course by the time I got the doctor's office I was feeling like a million bucks and was getting a little irritated with their insistent "But how did this happen?" questions. The doc there gave me some Skelaxin, a muscle relaxant, told me to come back Wednesday (since I'm off the next two days) for a follow up appointment, and to use all the ice and heat I want.
So now I'm stuck at home, with no car, no husband, and some very relaxed muscles........
