"Nurse Betty" ...maybe I should explain that.

To put to rest all associations between this blog and the movie starring Renee Zellweger, I figured it would be at least a little bit interesting to explain how I came up with the name.

I earned the nickname "Betty" while I was in Costa Rica. It seems that speakers of Spanish can't easily make the /th/ sound, due to its absence in their language. I tried emphasizing the /th/ sound at the end of my name ("Bettttthhhh") while gesturing towards my tongue to show that the sound is made with the tongue between the teeth. This actually worked, but I got so tired of people laughing and patting me on the head while I tried to "teach them to say something they can't say" that I quit doing so. I didn't much mind their attempt at "Beth," anyway; it came out "Bet," which turned into "Betty," and it sounded just fine to me.

So, now I'm "Betty," and I'll be a nurse someday, and there you have it: Nurse Betty.

Not all that exciting, I know.
