I know it's been a dog's age since I've updated this blog, so I feel obligated to post about my job. My other job posts have been quite negative. This one should be ...a little better.
A day or two after the incident where my boss yelled at me about the fan and complimented my co-worker on her attire, he and I had an opportunity to laugh about his being a big fat jerk. This is pretty much my style of confrontation; if there's something that I feel really needs to be brought up, but I'm too much of a pansy to be straight about it, I find a way to joke around the issue and inevitably stumble upon the truth. It's a big, cheesy, cop-out. I know that. But it has been effective, in various situations, which (unfortunately?) reinforces my doing it. Back to my story. I told the owner of the store that after recounting our fan conversation to my husband, Josh told me, "That guy sounds like a real jerk."
Pause, for effect....
Yes, I did tell my boss that my husband thinks he is a jerk.
You shouldn't be surprised at his response:
"You told your husband I said that?!" Does that make you want to take it back?
"Um, yeah. I did. In fact, the last thing he said to me when I left this morning was, 'Don't take any crap today, Beth. You don't get paid enough to be spoken to like that.' And I don't."
"Now I'm never going to get any business from the troopers!" Does THAT make you want to take it back? Ha!
Once again, I type: you shouldn't be surprised. I, however, was caught off-guard with this response, but lucky for me, he continued talking without me saying a word. He apologized for how it must have sounded, pretended that he had been yelling at the cook and not at me, and apologized again. And when I left work that day, he apologized again, and said that he was really going to work on communicating with me. The real kicker was that my next paycheck included a dollar-per-hour raise. Cool.
So maybe he's not a jerk?
