Hopefully it's not too late...

I always wish that I had a good, little garden. The previous owner of our place had a HUGE garden, all outlined in railroad ties. Last year I dutifully hoed out a small corner of it (by hand), and planted peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, and beans. I was most excited about the tomatoes, mmm. I watered and weeded and waited... and weeks later I had peas. Only peas. Nothing growing from any of the other seeds. I did enjoy many random picks from the plant, chomping the few peas not eaten by the rabbits raw in our back yard while playing with the dog.

This year, I have no energy to break my back or burn my skin with a fruitless attempt at growing ...vegetables. In fact, I'd just as soon dig up the whole garden, ditch the railroad ties, and re-seed the area with grass seed. It's going to be a big job, whenever it gets done, and I can guarantee you it won't be this year - Josh has no interest in it and I have no energy for it.

What I do have energy for, however, is buying tomato PLANTS from a greenhouse and potting them in a big pot on my deck. I paid $5 for two large, well-established plants that look a few days away from blossoming. I of course picked out cherry tomato plants (there's no point in growing a vegetable you can't pluck off the bush and eat on the spot, in my book). Add in a watering can, some potting soil, and the $2 pot, and the whole deal cost me about $14. Probably kind of pricey for a mere two plants, but I am starting from scratch, having to buy the soil and the pot and the watering can, too. And if I get 14 cherry tomatoes from those two plants, I will consider myself in the black with that expenditure.

Wish me luck.

Sounds like a great plan! Good luck, we should bring down some basil for a salad once you harvest the first batch!
