Get your act together, people

OK, this is annoying me so I figured I'd post about it. Today I dressed my son in a 6-9 month onesie, underneath a 3-6 month romper. The onesie is a little loose; the romper is a little tight. Before I changed him, though, he was wearing a 3-6 month onesie and a 3-month sleeper. And before that sleeper, Ben was wearing a 0-3 month onesie (albeit a bit snug) under a 3-6 month Mets shirt (just barely fit) with 0-3 month pants.

*The 3-6 month onesie (from Old Navy) is loose. The 3-6 month romper (also from Old Navy) is tight. This makes no sense, but reiterates my general feeling that Old Navy clothes are sized/styled/cut weird, and you have to try everything on.

*The 6-9 month (Circo) onesie fits almost exactly the same way as the 3-6 month onesie from Old Navy. Both are a bit loose. This supports the point that baby clothing companies are not on the same page. Add in the fact that my son can reasonably wear a 0-3 month (Gerber) onesie one day and two days later can wear a 6-9 month (Circo) onesie, and well... this is just nuts.

I have learned a few things here. One, Old Navy baby clothes fit just like their adult line: they don't. Ha ha. You have to really look for a good fit, try everything on, and plan for odd shrinkage in the washer/dryer. Two, apparently Circo clothing runs a bit small. I don't have anything to base this on other than the onesie Ben is wearing today, but given the fact that the only significant difference between it and the 3-6 month onesie of yesterday is a bit of sleeve length, I think I might be on to something. Three, Gerber clothing runs small. Ben lived in a set of three Gerber sleepers for the first few weeks of his life because they were the only newborn-sized clothes that he didn't fall out of. He actually kind of swam in them for a few days. Four, Carters clothes seem to be right on, at least for my kiddo. And finally, FIVE... as annoying as it is to put your baby into more than one outfit per day (particularly if it is not because said baby soiled it in any way), it's worth trying on some of the bigger sizes early, because occasionally they will fit. And if you don't, you'll end up missing out on a whole romper/sleeper/pack of onesies because you assumed they'd be too big.

I suppose it is worth recognizing that all babies are different, and the fact that my son is somewhat of a meatball doesn't mean an entire line of clothing is sized incorrectly... actually, maybe it's his height that is creating the "problem." I just wish that 0-3 months meant 0-3 months. You know? From Carters to Old Navy to Circo to Gerber and back again.

Maybe this is why girls are bred to like playing dress-up.

I hear ya on this one. The same thing goes in the opposite direction I find. Well, at least with my kids, maybe because they are smaller. Adam is wearing his 2T coat from last year. I had a hand me down 3T one and the 2T fit so he is gettig two years out of it. I never put his clothes away until I am sure they won't fit the following year. I mean with Van, his growth is more rapid so I know he won't fit into his 12 month clothes next winter. But Adam got some fall usage out of his 18 month stuff and hopefully the 3T clothes next year too.
